Subject: I Apologize
But again this week we have virtually no time to e-mail. It’s really unfortunate.
I just wanted to let you know the highlight of the week. It kind of digressed as the week progressed, but we have an investigator named Edwin who wants to get baptized! The only issue is, I’m not sure if he wants to get baptized for the purpose of joining the church so much as just that he knows it’s the right thing to do to get baptized. So we need the Lord’s help and all of your prayers to help him learn the import of the restored gospel.
Sorry I missed you yesterday. I really didn’t think you’d have an op to email on MLK day.
We’ll pray for Edwin, but here’s my thoughts on it. When people join the church, they are usually doing it on faith and hope. The gospel is way to deep to be fully understood by someone without the gift of the Holy Ghost.
I can relate to Edwin. When I was investigating the church, I really had no idea whether the things I was being taught were really true or not. I made the decision to be baptized based on the fact that I read in the New Testament that God commands everyone to be baptized.
In fact, I’m pretty sure I lied in my baptismal interview when they asked me if I had a testimony and believed the teachings. (It’s hard to remember, but I’m guessing the baptismal interview is a lot like a temple recommend interview.)
I didn’t know how to explain to (I believe it was a bishop that did my baptismal interview) that I was getting baptized based on a hope that it was true. I believed I needed to join the church to find out whether it was true or not.
So I wouldn’t worry too much about Edwin’s motivations. (Like President Allred once said, “I’ve got High Priests who don’t understand the covenants . . . “ ) Just get him the gift of the Holy Ghost and the Lord will take care of the rest.
Hope you have a great week and I’ll talk to you next time.
All my love,
Thanks, Dad, that’s really helpful.
We were at the church computers yesterday for, like, fifty minutes, so we came to the library today.
